THE EFFECT OF CORONA VIRUS ON ACADEMICS By Chukwuedo Ngozi.

entry 1

Corona virus otherwise known as COVID’19 [Chinese Organised Virus ln December 2019] is a disease named based on the crown - like projection on the surface. It is a type of virus that typically affect the respiratory tract of mammals including humans.
Corona virus pandemic is the wide spread of Corona virus disease all over the world. Corona virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China. The cure of this virus has not been discovered till date but the spread can be cautioned by following some procedures such as regular hand washing, covering nose and mouth with elbow or disposable tissue when coughing or sneezing, maintaining social distancing, using alcohol based hand sanitizers e.t.c
When this virus first started, it was not seen as a big problem until it started spreading rapidly. The virus is a disease that has several negative effect on the world. The virus has  successfully shutdown the economy of almost all the nations of the world, and also the educational system. This led to the shutdown of schools and academic activities. Schools have been closed for a while because it is easier for students to get infected due to regular close contact and lack of social distancing between students in schools. The virus has not only affected the world's economy and education but also health sector, industrial sector and business of various individuals. It has led to various form of losses such as financial losses, job losses and also loss of lives.
The current pandemic has delayed some schools examination while it has delayed all schools resumption for 3rd term. This day (8th of May) makes the 7th   week which students have been made to stay at home because of this pandemic.
One of the effect of COVID’19 [ Chinese Organised Virus l December 2019]Pandemic on academics is the disruption of educational and academic  activities thereby leading to decrease in learning activities. Based on the fact that students don't engage in learning activities, they fail to task their brains thereby causing mental weakness due to inadequate mental stress and work. So, by the time  schools will reopen they might find it hard to read their books regularly and also may have forgotten some basic concepts of their subjects.
Another effect of this pandemic is rise in nonchalant and unwilling attitude to learn on the part of students. Most students develop nonchalant attitude and unwillingness to read on their own due to this pandemic. Some students prefer to watch movies, play games, sleep and engage in irrelevant activities instead of reading their books. As a result students feel lack of enthusiasm towards learning.
The online teaching is also an impromptu teaching so some teachers are not adequately prepared for it. Due to the fact that they are not adequately prepared for it, they do not teach efficiently and effectively.
Further more, COVID’19[Chinese Organised Virus l December 2019 ] has caused delay in the progression of educational activities, level and classes. For instance, SSS3 students are supposed to seek admission late this year,2020, but that mayno longer be possible due to this pandemic. The academic session has been delayed and also the academic calendar has been disorganized. So when schools will eventually reopen, there is a possibility that  teachers will rush students so as to meet up with school calendar. By doing this, the effectiveness and efficiency of such teaching and the rate of  assimilation will drastically reduce.
Conclusively, the pandemic has caused a large number of students a lot, because most students who cannot afford to buy  phones or electronic cannot  participate in online teaching so they don't get to obtain as much knowledge as those who have phones or electronic devices and are engaging in online learning. To those who don't have phones or electronic devices,  academic activities has been put to a full stop, that is, there is no means of learning for them. If schools was in progress, students will be busy but because of this pandemic, students who  cannot afford to buy phones might engage in immoral or wayward act because they are idle. An idle hand is devil's workshop.
