COVID 19:IMPENDING SITUATION THREATENS TO DEEPEN NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM CRISIS

entry 3

The outbreak of the novel Corona virus pandemic in China became primetime news in Nigeria.Without a doubt the Coronavirus pandemic has adversely affected all aspects of our lives. In Nigeria, the educational system has been devasted and children from poor families are bearing the burnt of it.
A case study of the Nigeria secondary School which is also affected by the pandemic .This pandemic has made we students separated from our teachers, counselors and other staff members who can support we students during important developmental transitions.
How has educational system been impacted in case of a secondary School?A crisis within a crisis .
According to UNESCO about 10.3million secondary School students are out of school are out of school as a result of the closure of schools in Nigeria, approximately 81 percent of them are public school students.
According to a report 83 percent of Nigerians have access to mobile phone connection, however of these 50 percent reside in Urban areas. The proportion would be skewed towards high socio economic house hold and Urban house hold ;an overwhelming majority of whom are private school students who already have a learning advantage over the public school peers .For  children from poor background who tends to have less access to Internet connectivity, computer and other devices and they live in the rural areas.
Furthermore, the pandemic has affected secondary school students in the way that the students in the way that the students will be relaxed that they aren't going to school so they won't read their books and after the pandemic has gone if all schools in Nigeria should resume we students are to start with our examination and we aren't prepared so it would lead to failure of the students.
Perhaps this covid 19 driven school closure is the crisis we need to identify some crucial sector-wide gaps. The covid 19 pandemic is surely not the last crisis that threaten school continuity in Nigeria, given the increase in the number of Infectious disease World wide.It is therefore important that the government creates a holistic contingency plan that goes beyond addressing school-based safety measures, but also identify ways to ensure learning continues and provide support for both teachers and students during this crisis.
Inevitably the covid 19 pandemic will be resolved, either through a break through in treatment options, the development of a vaccine or with the world population developing held immunity, however without intentional and concerted effort,it effects on education could have lasting impact on the trajectory of education. The onus is now on us ,do we allow this crisis to further deepen our education crisis,or do we seize the opportunity to affect change that could address both pandemic driven and pre pandemic challenges?
Do you know that this Corona virus is a droplets disease that affect the respiratory organs?
