ACTS Challenges Legal Ruling on Church Education in Nigeria
In a significant legal development, Prof. Kunle Macaulay, President of the Association of Christian Theologians (ACTS), has taken a stand against a High Court decision impacting church education. Prof. Macaulay has appealed to the National Appeal Court of Justice, advocating for the separation of church education from the secular system governed by the National University Commission (NUC).
Prof. Macaulay’s appeal argues that Christian education should operate independently of secular oversight to preserve its spiritual and faith-based focus. He contends that the current NUC regulations favor secular institutions and government influences, undermining the integrity of church education and professions.
Supporting this appeal are key figures within ACTS, including Professors Aniefiok Akpabio, Patricia Iroele, and James Ezeoma, alongside prominent Christian leader Rev. Mrs. Funmi Bakare and Bishop Stephen Ogunduyile. They emphasize the need for church professions to be managed by church leaders to maintain credibility and uphold their religious purpose.
The outcome of this legal challenge could reshape the regulatory landscape for religious education in Nigeria, reflecting broader concerns about the balance between secular and spiritual education.
